This looks like the biggest construction project ever on Maui! The Conrac will be 3 stories [1 or more underground], park 4,500 cars and house rental car companies, restaurants and shopping. If will also feature a 140,000 gallon cascading waterfall at the front of the building. The water feature will serve as an irrigation reservoir for the grounds. The electric tram system that will ferry passengers to and from the terminal & will eventually be powered by solar energy which will help the airport reduce its overall carbon footprint and bring the state closer to its goal of 100 percent renewable energy. The tram’s classic appearance is designed to reflect the Valley Isle’s plantation roots.
The cost of the new facility is approximately $340 million, funded solely by a Customer Facility Charge which consists of a daily charge of $4.50 to those who rent a car. No taxpayer funds will be used. By my calculations, if we assume 7,000 visitors a day, and average stay of 10 days @ $4.50/day = 1,079 days to pay it off. Just under 3 years!
